American Kenpo is a self-defense system designed to neutralize an attack, primarily through a series of blocks, punches, or kicks. For the most part it is a standing system. While it often involves taking an attacker to the ground, it seldom has the student going to the ground. We are teaching an abbreviated version of the Ed Parker system with an emphasis on the self-defense aspects. We place a greater emphasis on the quality of the technique given than on the quantity of techniques available.

Kenpo / Japanese Jiu Jitsu:
The Kenpo Program at Terry Dow’s Academy of Martial Arts is a blend of old Shaolin Kenpo and Kosho Shorei Ryu Kenpo. Shaolin Kenpo is a striking art based on combinations of movements designed for self defense purposes. Kosho Shorei Ryu Kenpo is the study of natural movements utilizing strikes, locks and throws. This system is now headed by Bruce Juchnik, Hanshi. The system was passed on to him from one of his teachers, James Mitose. It encompasses any movements or techniques that the practitioner feels natural about executing at any given time. The art encompasses any martial system that follows natural laws and principles of movement. Though using set techniques as a learning tool, the art teaches you to be creative in the way you move or react and adapt to any situation.
Kickboxing fundamentals train our clients with hand/eye coordination, speed, agility, balance, power and endurance. In addition to the fundamentals of proper kickboxing. Some of the training we do is uses focus mitts, heavy bags, jump ropes and ladder drills. Don't forget the "good old fashioned" calisthenics, push-ups, and sits-up. The end result: our clients receive a training session designed to work their full body and have a lot of fun doing it.
Kickboxing bootcamp is much like regular kickboxing but with an added benefit of HIIT training. This class is only offered at 6am M-F or when we announce it on our Facebook page. Check out the videos to the left to see what we're talking about!
Kung Fu is a universal name for all Chinese Martial Arts. Our Kung Fu program integrates exercises and forms used for developing powerful movement and health. Utilizing kickboxing, throws, and joint locks we have a unique approach to self defense which prepares students for reacting in time to non-choreographed attacks.
Internal Martial Arts:
Internal Martial Arts is a term for martial arts based on mindfulness, body mechanics and physics. Maintaining a link to the present moment allows a practitioner to unify mental and physical and control and off balance an opponent for defense and offense. Health, self defense, and increased awareness are all benefits of this process.
Mixed Martial Arts at the Training station consists of training in several categories:
kickboxing, grappling, clinch and Thai work, BJJ and conditioning classes
They are all geared towards strength and explosiveness for the Ring or Cage. Anyone can train in our program, but only the elite will make the fight team. Team Captain Brandon Cyr was named #1 amateur 170lb in New England 2009 before turning Pro. Team Coach Terry Dow has nearly 30 years of martial arts experience, Master rank under Legend Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, and has competed in two World championships in Karate and Kick Boxing.
