Not Duane Benton. For Duane it started off as a hobby and slowly became a passion. We did an interview with Duane to hear his story. Here's how it all began.
Duane started training in Bralizian Jui Jitsu at The Training Station on February 15, 2013.
I was overweight but I didn't really think it was a big deal I was more interested in training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
I have competed in my first BJJ tournament Gained a second stripe on my belt and lost about 100lbs!
What are your favorite health and fitness blogs, books, or magazines you read?
I read Jiu Jitsu magazine, I get a lot of information from the 10th planet jiujistu website as well as the Nibiru forum, I have also gained a wealth of knowledge from the health and fitness guests on the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast.
I know it’s not very exciting but I’m a salad guy I love a good salad with a large amount of protein.
What is your least favorite healthy food to eat?
I really can’t stand tofu LOL
What is your favorite cheat meal?
Wings, Ribs, burgers, BBQ items.
Do you take any supplements?
I take a high performance multi such as opti men, about 5000mg of fish oil daily, 5000iu of vitamin D3, ZMA before bed, and cordyceps mushrooms and L-arginine before I train.
When it comes to eating well what are your top 3 recommendations?
High protein, low carbs, lots of veggies
How did you manage to alter your eating patterns and still hang out with friends and family without being tempted by what they are eating?
A lot of my friends and most of my family eat pretty healthy.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as well as Kettle bell exercises.
What is your favorite form of cardiovascular exercise to do and why?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I also think high intensity interval training is pretty good
When you are not at The Training Station do you do any other activities?
I usually do a kettlebell workout on Sundays in the back yard.
Have you had too deal with any injuries along the way?
Yeah nothing to major just jammed toes or fingers maybe a little mat burn but nothing that would stop me from training.
What is your best piece of advice for those just starting to exercise?
Do something you really enjoy that way it doesn't feel like work and it’s something you can look forward to instead of dreading, also I think the group atmosphere is pretty important because other people can push you to reach your full potential.
What is your goal for this year?
My goal this year is to compete at 222lbs in a Brazilian Jui Jitsu tournament.
How did you manage to integrate this healthy lifestyle into your life?
I chose something I really really really enjoy so its easy to change your lifestyle around that. Also the company I keep now is very supportive and keeps me on track.
What motivates you to continue with this lifestyle?
I just always want to be a better me than I was yesterday, I love Brazilian jiu jitsu so much and I just want to learn and grow. The fact that it helps me physically and mentally is just a side effect from enjoying the sport so much.
